What Causes Pigmented Lesions?

Pigmented lesions occur when certain skin cells are stimulated to produce higher-than-usual amounts of melanin, the normal pigment in the skin. For example, exposure to ultraviolet light (such as from the sun) can stimulate the production of melanin, and the subsequent development of various pigmented lesions (such as solar lentigos). Other lesions are visible at birth, or shortly afterward, and are a result of body chemistry.

The Q-switched laser emits short pulses of intense light which pass harmlessly through normal skin to the abnormal pigment. This pigment selectively absorbs the laser light which causes it to fragment into minute particles that are easily removed by your body's immune system.

Any pigment that is not completely fragmented may require additional treatments, but the lesion gradually fades. Normal skin is not harmed by the treatment. Only excess pigment is removed, and your skin is left intact.
