Pigmented lesions occur when certain skin cells are stimulated to produce higher-than-usual amounts of melanin, the normal pigment in the skin. For example, exposure to ultraviolet light (such as from the sun) can stimulate the production of melanin, and the subsequent development of various pigmented lesions (such as solar lentigos).
Other lesions are visible at birth, or shortly afterward, and are a result of body chemistry. |
